Spider Wasp on Buckwheat #1 - Pepsis mexicana - male

Spider Wasp on Buckwheat #1 - Pepsis mexicana - Male
Riley Wilderness Park, Coto De Caza, Orange County, California, USA
July 6, 2008
Size: guess 3/4"

Male pompilid.
This is a male spider wasp. Might even be Pepsis mexicana, as the males can be quite small.

Aha! Thanks, Eric.
I have shot P. mexicana at this site and that looks right, so I'll move it there.

Tarantula hawks were aloft briefly one day last week. I haven't seen them before or since. Last year, they were thick here for several days.
