Purpuricenus sp.? - Purpuricenus paraxillaris

Purpuricenus sp.? - Purpuricenus paraxillaris
Temple Hills, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
July 18, 2021
Thought this one might be Purpuricenus paraxillaris. However, none of the images of that species here show those 2 red spots on the pronotum.

Sadly, this one was discovered deceased, and I usually only photograph live specimens, as a rule. In this case, I made an exception.

You are correct...
Purpuricenus paraxillaris. Those orange spots on the pronotum are just a really odd color variation. I've seen a few that have the sides of the pronotum orange - but this is a first for me. The raised callous medially on the pronotum helps separate this species from axillaris. Cool beetle - did you keep it?

Thanks
for the quick confirmation, Robert. Yes, I still have it. Sadly, as you can see, I did not find it in very good condition.

I do not collect, so if you (or someone else) wants it, let me know and I will pass it on.

Cheers.

Thanks!
I would be very pleased to take that off your hands - having specimens that exhibit color anomalies adds value to the collection and documents these strange morphs.

I'll send you an e-mail with my contact info...
