Paper Wasp - Polistes - female

Paper Wasp - Polistes - Female
Ozark Mountains, Searcy County, Arkansas, USA
July 10, 2008
I watch this wasp chew off a chunk of grasshopper. She then continued chewing the detached piece into mush before flying away and taking the food back to her nest. Obviously, the grasshopper was not paralyzed because what remained of it crawled away while she was chewing -- not far away, of course, because the grasshopper was, as they say, mortally wounded.
