Syrphid Fly 9mm - Microdon pallipennis

Syrphid Fly 9mm - Microdon pallipennis
Tesuque, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, USA
July 26, 2021
Size: 9mm
A new Microdon for BugGuide? Didn't recognize it among the guide's species or the genus-level photos, but most likely I'm way off the mark. Help, please!

Or is it omegasyrphus? Exact match to the pics in the Field…
…Guide. That would be an awesome find!!
If that is the case then Bill, maybe you should send this to Jeff and Martin for a possible species ID

Omegasyrphus has been conside
Omegasyrphus has been considered a subgenus of Microdon and shown as such in Checklists but the Field Guide has given Omegasyrphus full genus status. It is still shown as a subgenus of Microdon on BugGuide, however. Leg colour is different from the Omegasyrphus in the Field Guide but it still likely to be Omegasyrphus. I have sent it to Jeff and Martin for advice on whether this is Omegasyrphus and whether they should be separated and given full genus status on BugGuide....

Omegasyrphus
Hi Bill. I agree that this is Omegasyrphus, likely O. pallipennis (wing with black maculae broadly connected anteriorly). Omegasyrphus is treated as a genus in the field guiding following Reemer and Stalhs (2013). Generic revision and species classification of the Microdontinae (Diptera, Syrphidae). Menno Reemer is the guru on all things Microdon and bases his taxonomy on phylogenetic reasoning.
