Black Firefly - Lucidota atra

Black Firefly - Lucidota atra
Parkwood, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
June 5, 2005
Size: 9 mm
Found on some rotting wood in my yard. Captured, chilled, and posed. Length measured by photographing adjacent to a scale--that's body length, not including the antennae. This genus has reduced, though not absent, light organs, shown in the ventral view. References vary on whether they flash. It seems that they do flash, but infrequently, perhaps. I've only noticed them during the day.
