Orchelimum vulgare - male

Orchelimum vulgare - Male
Bryan--vacant lot SE of Sam Rayburn school, Brazos County, Texas, USA
July 24, 2021
Found singing in tall grass. Song and cerci seem a best match for O. vulgare, but I have seen that species in the northeastern USA and it looks very different. So either O. vulgare is much larger and golden-colored here, or it is undescribed...

Another question, do you know
Another question, do you know why meadow katydids would sing from tall trees in the forest in an mostly undisturbed area? I was at Starved Rock State Park in Illinois today, and I heard many O. vulgare, O. nigripes, and possibly O. gladiator calling from pretty far up in deciduous trees and conifers in the middle of the forest. Nothing had been mowed there recently, and I heard other individuals calling from vegetation near water like they normally do.

weird
Odd behavior. O. silvaticum and minor regularly call from treetops, but those three species are usually in low vegetation. Occasionally I hear O. nigripes way high in a tree. Perhaps there are a lot of males dispersing from nearby fields or wetlands.

Moved very tentatively
as I see no other real option for these

Moved from Greater Meadow Katydids.
