Pennsylvania Leafhopper for ID - Alebra

Pennsylvania Leafhopper for ID - Alebra
Port Clinton Fire Tower, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA
July 28, 2021
Size: 4 mm
What is the strange dark appendage apparently coming out from the center of abdomen? I don't see this feature in any leafhopper anatomy diagrams. Is it an artifact?. It does appear in other images as well. On a sheet with a Bioquip UV black light.

Yes, the ovipositor
My guess is that it sticks out just as a chance result of the same process that caused the legs to stiffen at unnatural angles. Maybe muscles contracting as it dies.

That’s the female’s ovipositor
Not sure why it’s sticking out
