Trying to ID a bug that bit/stung my daughter...

Hi there,

We just moved to a new home out in the boonies just west of Columbus, Ohio and my oldest daughter _loves_ exploring the woods and wetlands for new creepy crawlies. Yesterday she got a bit of a surprise when one of the bugs she was examining gave her a nasty bite/sting on the thumb. She said it was 'neat looking' with a dark body and 'big red eyes'. The eyes were the most prominent thing that she kept mentioning, and i don't know if she picked it up or it lit upon her hand but she said it was just sitting there and BAM...ouch.

The bite/sting area had a small purple spot that looked like she was hit with a piercing stinger of some type (but no stinger). Her thumb was hurting pretty bad and had her tearing up for a good 15 minutes after the incident. The thing that has me a little concerned (note the time) is that she just came home early from a sleepover with a friend, and the thumb is pretty hard and she said it's sore. She's also having a bit of a stomach ache and some other maladies (although i have no reason to believe the latter are related).

If we could solve the mystery of this bug i think she would rest easier. She spent a few minutes on google trying to look it up and found a water boatman. She said that it looked like what bit her, but it didn't have the red eyes. I read another description of them that said they '', so it could be what it was, but i'd love to hear any other potentials.

--BAH! I think i figured out what it is, a 'backswimmer'. Sound about right? This picture from Wikipedia pretty much convinced me...

Thanks!

Maybe an "alligator flea"
Naucoridae are also aquatic, and when i was bit on the thumb by one, it hurt like crazy and left a tiny wound like you described. Here's one with red eyes.

Backswimmer
Here is a pic with red eyes. They have been known to bite.

Have a look at

a Wheel Bug

The bite sounds about right, and they are very "neat looking." The eye color varies with the lighting.
