Probably californicus
Probably Xanthomelanodes californicus.

Thanks loads, John
Could you open a new page for this, or am I premature?

Moved
Moved from Cylindromyia.

Tachinidae: prob. Xanthomelanodes sp.
Tachinidae: prob. Xanthomelanodes sp. ...it is not Trichopoda

Ah ha! Thought it looked different.
Thanks so much, Norm.

I agree
Looks like it to me. I thought at first trichopoda but it doesn't have those feathery legs.

Exactly what I did.
Thanks, Jon.

Or Xanthomelanodes?
Not at all sure, but see genera info. pages - you've got some yellow on the base of the legs here - and X-melanodes does occur in California, although we don't have western images yet - I just submitted a set, I think...

Interesting. Mine looks like it's right in the middle.
Previously, I wasn't aware of Xanthomelanodes. Thanks for the info, Ken. I've subscribed to your post and hope something definitive happens there.
