Nomia species - Nomia
Chassahowitzka, Citrus County, Florida, USA
August 9, 2021
Size: Around 1cm, +/- 1mm
Many bees observed feeding on Galactia in sandhill/flatwoods ecotone near extensive hydric hammock. Some females had visible pollen loads, others did not. As soon as I heard a thunder clap from approaching storms, all Nomia stopped feeding. Several Nomia were noticed inspecting nearby sandy soils that lay underneath small stones, their bodies nearly completely hidden under the stones so that only their shiny abdomens stuck out. I am not sure if this was a search for minerals or a clever plan to shield their burrow entrances from frequent driving rains.

Thanks! Habitat and floral genus match records, although this might be a new county record. I haven't checked this site yet, however.
