Moved from Butterflies and Moths. Beautiful photo! Hemaris gracilis or thysbe. Go to the links to Moth Photographers Group for either species and you will see a way to differentiate these species with a close look at the wing. I cannot see the wing venation/maculation clear enough on this image to make a species call. Perhaps you might have another image that will help?

Hemaris thysbe?
Thanks for the help with this moth Steve. I was wondering what I had missed. I was convinced by the white legs (as opposed to reddish in H. gracillis) that this was thysbe. But I had not checked on MPG, and the comparison of wing venation seems most definitive. I know I have other photos. I will try to find one that clearly shows the wing venation sufficiently for an ID. Thanks again.

legs
I also considered the legs and thought there was some reddish brown showing on the front of one of them. Perhaps your other photos might get other angles of the legs too.

update: I just looked at several images of thysbe and they have reddish brown on the front/top, so it does not look like the legs are going to be a deciding factor.
