black-orange lycid. - Lopheros fraternus

black-orange lycid. - Lopheros fraternus
Hollis, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
May 18, 2005
This presumably male lycid (it was smaller than two others and I had earlier seen one of the smaller ones riding one of the larger ones as if mating) made repeated attempts to fly in my light arena. It started with simple opening and closing of wings, but was soon confident enough to get briefly airborne. Six of my eight tan plateback larvae have now pupated and emerged as adults. Two have yet to pupate.
