I knew beetles have diverged into hundreds of thousands of species, but hadn't learned so many are so small!

Off topic, but highly recommend Richard Prum's book 'The Evolution of Beauty'. It advances knowledge about an evolutionary mechanism first proposed by Charles Darwin, that of sexual selection. This refutes, with much evidence, the notion that all genetic drift (change in species) is driven by 'useful adaptation' such that make following generations more fit to survive is wrong.

I am 2/3 through and have learned so much. Classic book. The book doesn't address insect/bug evolution directly, but the 'Beauty Happens' mechanism likely initiated most speciation.

Check it out. Science, man. You gotta love it.
