Male prionid with long mandibels - Nothopleurus lobigenis - Male
Picture Rocks, NW of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA
July 17, 2008
Size: 47 mm
After the discussions about the large long-horned beetles around Tucson, I got curious and went looking for a male - at our only night-lighted place in Picture Rocks, the gas station (unleaded $3.869). I found several females, several male Derobrachus, and this guy.

The female mandibles should be shorter than the head and more strongly curved. The fifth abdominal sternite on the male is very transverse and has a dense fringe of golden hairs. The female fifth sternite is moderately long with a broadly emarginate apex.
