M. mexicanus cubicola
Is M. mexicanus cubicola the only subspecies in FL? I've been trying to figure it out, but can't find much info.
Thanks!

Yes
M. mexicanus cubicola
is found from South Carolina south and into Texas so is the only member of the genus to occur east of Texas. It's easily denoted by the yellow-marked hind legs and generally lighter color. The other subspecies,
M. mexicanus mexicanus
, is only reported from Texas as far as our area's concerned. It's denoted by the entirely brown legs and generally darker coloration
Carpenter's checklist
is a good place to begin for range data in this genus. Richards (1978)
(

)
is also a fairly useful reference, though there have been some taxonomic changes since. It's certainly the most complete key to polistine species.
