Eastern Carpenter Bee? - Xylocopa virginica

I've never seen one of these before but looking through the guide and online it closely matches an eastern carpenter bee. I'm rather confused though because the data map and information online suggest that this bee is only found in eastern North America. I'd love to get a confirmed identification if possible. Thanks for all your help.

These can be transported long distances in wood
In warm years they may survive N of historical range
