boatman
Elliott nhighway mp 49, Alaska, USA
September 1, 2021
Size: 7 mm
I found this at my moth light (100W black light). It sure looks like a water boatman but the light was set up at the edge of a forest (birch, aspen, spruce) with no known bodies of water in the immediate area. iNaturalist computer suggestion pegs this as the genus Sigara. Do water beetles disperse by air? There are what looks like they might be wings, although rather oddly shaped.

The size is accurate as I was able to get my measuring gizmo up next to the insect.

with very few exceptions, adult aquatic insects are good fliers
...and often outnumber non-aquatic insects at lights by a wide margin
please note this is not a beetle
