Small day-flying moth - Heliothodes diminutiva

Small day-flying moth - Heliothodes diminutiva
Nix Nature Center, Laguna Beach, Orange County, California, USA
July 18, 2008
Size: wingspan ~1"
Quite pretty in the air, but a very weak flyer, i.e. "fluttery". Stays close to the ground, feeding on the lowest flowers.

Moved
Moved from Heliothodes.

Per off-site communication: " That is Heliothodes diminutiva; the first spring brood is purple like Schinia pulchripennis or Heliolonche pictipennis and is strictly diurnal; the subsequent summer generations are nocturnal and often look tan/blonde. Host is tarweed mostly, especially summer broods."

Thanks, James, for your special effort here.

We get a sense of Schinia
When we look through MPG we see things similar at 11091 or 11102 or 11112 but nothing quite right. Of course, they are missing some of the Schinia so this just might be one of those. Anyway it's a start, but it sure looks like Schinia to us.

Thanks; I'll check.
A starting place is certainly welcome. I know next to nothing about moths.

(Written later: Looks good, but apparently we don't have this species at Bug Guide yet.

Heliothodes
Looks very close to a variation of Heliothodes diminutiva in the Vargo collection:

This is however, a tough group that could benefit from some revision.

Thanks, J.D.
Looks like this one won't be esy.
