The Unknown Bug In The Water - Lepidurus

The Unknown Bug In The Water - Lepidurus
Blackfoot, Bingham County, Idaho, USA
June 28, 2008
Size: in. wide 2 in. long
These were in a pond near our home. The grandkids pointed them out and asked what they were. I didn't have a answer for them and could not find one. Hope you can help. The pond dries up during the winter.

Moved
Moved from Triops.

The large supra-anal plate (paddle-like projection between the "tails") is not found in Triops.

Moved
Moved from Bug-like Creatures Not Covered By BugGuide. Please see the discussion here regarding the newly expanded scope of BugGuide.

Triop
Some sort of triop, a crustacean. Probably species Triops longicaudatus.

"Tadpole shrimp."
They are known more commonly as "tadpole shrimp." Someone was asking when we would get one of these into the guide, but I can't recall who....

Triops
Would triops be appropriate for the BugGuide? I only discovered them this year as well, in a vernal pool in the Sonoran Desert, and now am quite smitten with them.

NO
See the title of this section "Bug-like Creatures Not Covered By BugGuide". It is a FEW example images of things we currently DO NOT want people to submit.
