Size: 1/2 to 3/4 inch
They come and go in such a hurry and head directly into the woods. I'd love to know what they're doing and bringing back to they "nest".

Yellowjacket of some kind
Looks like some type of yellowjacket. In that case, it does sting. Regarding what it's bringing back to its nest, yellowjackets are omnivores, so it's probably dragging back whatever it can find -- old fruit, insects, spiders, even meat from dead birds/mammals.
