Archips infumatana (Zeller, 1875)
Tortrix (Cacoecia) infumatana Zeller, 1875
(1) Explanation of Names
infumatana: from the Latin "infumatus", past participle of "infumare" (to smoke; to cure or dry by smoking)
In entomology, "infumate" means having a brownish-black color as though from being smoked or infumated; probably refers to the dark markings on the adult forewing, and is the origin of the suggested common name Smoked Leafroller (for the same reason as the name
Smoked Sallow was suggested for
Enargia infumata)
Identification
Adult - forewing brown with large blackish patch in median area, and smaller patches in basal and subterminal areas; hindwing grayish-brown, paler toward base.
Range
Quebec and Ontario to Florida, west to Texas and at least Iowa.
Type locality: Missouri.
Season
Adults fly in June and July.
