My nephew wanted me to see the new queens. We went back under the same slate slab in the backyard walkway and found many of these large winged ones. I think there may have also been some smaller winged ones but I'm not sure.

But, they are citronella ants.
Quite likely Lasius (Acanthomyops) murphyi, based on the dense yellow fuzz on the face of the winged females. The smaller winged ones you saw were males.
