Backstroke vs. Breaststroke vs. ............ Notonecta undulata? - Notonecta
Carver, Clackamas County, Oregon, USA
September 21, 2021
Was viewing (thru the camera lens) this BackSwimmer in an irrigation puddle when it suddenly flipped to do the breast stroke. Incredible luck to get both 'strokes'. I was feeling a little too smug as I put the camera down. Whereupon it did the 3rd stroke. The flight stroke. Took wing and departed the puddle. Had I continued to view thru the lens I could have gotten that stroke too. Maybe next time? If I live that long. Quite different from the only image i found for Oregon , although that may be a faded specimen or maybe molt is involved?
(FEEL FREE TO FRASS THE PUDDLE PHOTO IF SO DESIRED)

A shield?
Knowing nothing of insects, I can't help but notice the similarity of the 'shield' to . Just a coicidence? Convergent evolution? Or?
