Unknown Hornworm - Manduca sexta

Unknown Hornworm - Manduca sexta
Fort Collins, Larimer County, Colorado, USA
September 7, 2021
Unsure of the type of hornworm this is (Top of photo). It was eating a tomato plant so initially we thought it was a tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) or a tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta). However, after comparing it with the tobacco hornworm it is next to in picture, we realized that it is very different in markings and coloration. We also compared it with photos of a tomato hornworm but it is even more different than those guys. The color is a more pale green with white markings and a white horn. It is also in the same instar as the tobacco hornworm pictured so we ruled out possible variation of color due to instar stage. Does anyone know if this is just a color variation that happens or if this could be an entirely different species?

I think that these are just a few of the expected color variations.
