Cupes capitatus

Cupes capitatus
Madison, 44.7744, -69.8846, Somerset County, Maine, USA
July 23, 2021
Size: 7.5 mm
Found crawling on a big pile of carpenter ant debris at the base of a large hollow Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus). Interesting that these beetles have these giant antennae but then also tiny little (you could almost say vestigial) hind legs. I felt a little bad sweeping the antennae back (to protect them) when I pointed the specimen since they always seem to be directed forward in the field.
