Eristalis on Sisymbrium loeselii - Eristalis

Eristalis on Sisymbrium loeselii - Eristalis
Sevenmile Creek, 8 km NW of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
October 16, 2021
Size: 11 mm
Eristalis with narrow white bands on the distal abdomen segments, on Sisymbrium loeselii flowers. Could see plumose antennae with hand lens. At least 2 present. Greatly outnumbered today by Eristalis tenax, of which at least 30 were present; this species appeared a bit smaller than E. tenax. Stream floodplain disturbed in winter 2020-2021 by heavy equipment during stream restoration work. Large patches of bare ground, stands of exotic perennial grasses re-establishing, large patches of Chenopodium simplex and C. berlandieri with many ripe seeds, and patches of still-flowering Sisymbrium loeselii. Few other plants still flowering. Late afternoon, sunny, calm, good air quality, 70 F.

Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland.

Possibly E. hirta? Strange ruffled appearance of abdomen likely in part because I had this individual in a plastic vial within a cooler of ice to cool it for photos and then release it - this one got somewhat wet.
