Grasshopper - Melanoplus walshii - female

Grasshopper - Melanoplus walshii - Female
Devil's Lake State Park, Sauk County, Wisconsin, USA
September 3, 2007
I know it's almost impossible to identify some of the grasshoppers from pictures, and particularly nymphs, but I thought I'd give it a try on this one.

Melanoplus walshii maybe
There have been several of these on BugGuide, and I've been researching names. I now believe that these from the Midwest with short wings and a pale stripe (sometimes faint) along the top edge of the folded wings are probably all referable to M. walshii.

Adult female.
This is actually an adult female in the genus Melanoplus, some species (and/or populations) of which have abbreviated wings. Have no clue as to species, though, sorry. Great image that may lead Dave Ferguson to a species....
