Bee fly ? - Apolysis - Male
Cody, Park County, Wyoming, USA
May 19, 2005
Size: 1/8 inch
NW Wyoming 8000 ft elevation. Tiny fly. Last July I posted a similar fly that Paul said is a bee fly. http://bugguide.net/node/view/9500
Any ideas? I get lost with wing venations.

Thanks for carefulness
I had almost shamed myself by starting to tell you to get your facts right about Diptera but fortunately I still have some carefulness in me. I was about to answer how you could confuse a dance fly with a bee fly but before i could do that I had to fill you in on which dance fly it was. I must admit, it was an unknown genus to me, but hey, what do I really know about the Nearctic? The result of running the image through the key was unsatisfactory. The genus Meghyperus (in Europe now in Atelestidae) has a similar, though slightly different wing venation but very different antennae. So, to make sure I did check the other orthorrhaphous families and there popped up the bee fly genus Oligodranes.

Oligodranes in not found in North America
This is a representative of the genus Apolysis (found worldwide). A number of species used to be placed in Olgidranes but after examination of true Oligodranes, it was found that Oligtodranes is restricted to the Middle East and Western Asia.

Apolysis
I changed the name of the genus page from Oligodranes to Apolysis, and added some comments to the Info page.
