A camel cricket, family Rhaph
A camel cricket, family Rhaphidophoridae. They are wingless and cannot chirp. However, you may be hearing a nearby cricket or katydid, which can be identified if you get a recording of the sound.

I'm fairly certain the sound was emanating from this guy though. The sound was the only way I could locate him amongst the debris. Unless there was another critter really close by that I missed

Could you give a description of the sound or a recording? These camel crickets has no wings at all, so they are mute.

Unfortunately I did not record the sound. It was more of a "brrzt" sound; short and constant, no real variation in frequency.

Try listening to Allonemobius fasciatus or socius, they make short buzzes.

fasciatus seems likely
why would a A. fasciatus be near a camel cricket, and I mistook the sound as emanating from the camel cricket? It really sounded like it was coming from the camel cricket - and it stopped the sound when I was above it.

A. fasciatus is a species tha
A. fasciatus is a species that is usually found on the ground, hiding within grasses, leaf litter, and woodchips. They almost never call from out in the open, so you won't catch one in the act. There was probably one hiding near the camel cricket, and it stopped when you approached.
