Ant-loving Beetle - Ceophyllus monilis

Ant-loving Beetle - Ceophyllus monilis
Horner Park, Richmond Hill (N43º52'20.3"W079º24'46.0"elev.197m), York Region, Ontario, Canada
July 16, 2008
Size: 3 mm
This is by far the strangest rove I've encountered. I found it running along the rim of an old Pinus stump. It wouldn't stop running, so I offered a drop of water to quench its thirst and slow it down. Note the mites clamped onto the hind leg.

Moved
Moved from Rove Beetles.

Another new one.
Donald, much thanks for the ID. It's the first time I've encountered this subfamily. I suppose I should expect future finds to be much smaller, if this one is a giant.

Yes
as big as they get in the US/Canada. Average size of pselaphines is probably about 1.5 mm --> lots of pretty small species.

A giant species.
I've never seen one so large.

Pselaphinae: Ceophyllus monilis
Typically found with a variety of ant species.
