Size: Approx 1 mm
There were dozens of these red mites crawling all over the retaining wall next to our driveway this evening. They generally go really fast but I noticed one that was staying pretty much in one spot. This one was also slightly larger than the others which were all about 1 mm. The larger one seemed to be the centre of attention for the others. The smaller ones would come up to the bigger one, sometimes signally but sometimes two or three at a time. They almost seemed to be 'arguing' over who could have access to the larger one. I wondered if the larger one was a female and this was some type of mating activity. After about five minutes, the larger one moved away and the activity ceased. I just noticed that the larger one seems to have some prey in its mouth. Perhaps that's why the others kept coming around?
