Female Megachile on Helianthus annuus - Megachile - female

Female Megachile on Helianthus annuus - Megachile - Female
Sevenmile Creek, 8 km NW of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
September 2, 2021
Size: 15 mm
Female megachilid on Helianthus annuus flowers. At least 3 present. Ruderal floodplain community with Kochia scoparia, Chenopodium simplex, Chenopodium berlandieri, Helianthus annuus, and Cleome serrulata. Early afternoon, light breeze, sunny, 70 F.

Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland.

Consulted Sheffield et al 2011 (Leafcutter and mason bees of the genus Megachile in Canada and Alaska) in an attempt to get to a species group. This individual has mandibles 4-toothed and with beveled cutting edges; sterna without white apical fasciae under scopal hairs; and terga (including T3-T5) with white apical fasciae. Indentation between 3rd and 4th mandibular teeth semicircular, with deepest point close to equidistant between them. The front edge of the clypeus was obscured by pollen, so I was not able to determine if its apex was straight or had protuberances.
