Antennal markings on Oecanthus - important field marks for ID - Oecanthus forbesi
Pleasant Prairie, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, USA
July 23, 2008
Oecanthus instar - not yet positively ID'd. Probably nigricornis (Black-horned), but need to rule out argentinus (Prairie). I just wanted to post this photo as a cue to those who don't know...of where to look for the antennal markings on tree crickets. (Plus, this little guy is too cute).

Note
After work by researchers who analyzed songs of tree crickets in multiple states, it is now generally accepted that greenish tree crickets with dark on the antennae, head, pronotum and/or limbs - that are west of Ohio - are Forbes' tree crickets.

Moved
Moved from Oecanthus. Turned out to be Black-horned TC.
