Odd tortoise shell-like thing (cocoon? seed pod?)

I found this in my yard as I was pulling weeds. It was on the ground next to the plant it had been on, and seems to be a cocoon of some sort: the outside seems like papier-mache although I didn't touch it or do anything to it to check for sure. I suppose it could be a seed pod, but I don't really know either way. I've never seen anything like this, and google was no help.

Yes! My neighbors have one or two small ones in their front yard. After I read your question I googled "cypress tree seed pod" and the images I saw look like the thingy I took a pic of. Thank you!
