hornworm on grape - Sphecodina abbottii

hornworm on grape - Sphecodina abbottii
kenora, Ontario, Canada
July 13, 2008
Within a few days around July 13th, I collected five of these hornworms from our grape vine. They have developed at quite different rates and the rest of the photos are staged until today, July 27th. I'm not sure what to provide for these cats regarding pupation so I think I'll place some peat moss in the container and see if that works. Otherwise, I'm sure they'll resort to pupating on the bare bottom of the box if necessary. Anyone know for sure what the end result might be, exactly what hornworm, sphinx, species?

Hornworm on Grape
Abbot's Sphinx perhaps? (Sphecodina abbottii)

I'm checking the Abbott's Sphinx photos on this site and there are definite variations in the adult phase as well...does this relate to the two specific colour differences in the caterpillar stage??? I'm particularly looking at http://bugguide.net/node/view/110740 and http://bugguide.net/node/view/40777 and wondering at the differences.

All five started out like the little blue-green guy and passed through several growth stages, maintaining that colour. The BROWN form and the GREEN/BROWN form are just that...varying colour forms of the same creature. At first I thought that the complete brown phase would change into the green/brown phase but when I explored this site more thoroughly, it seems that these may both be terminal stages. Now I'll explore the many sphinx photos which I've taken over the last month, of specimens which came to my blacklight, and try and find the link.

Sure!

But are these all the same specimen? This first one wouldn't really be recognizable (to me anyway) unless we knew it was the same as the other images, which are all definitely Abbott's Sphinx.
