Orange Epicauta on Solidago gigantea - Epicauta ferruginea

Orange Epicauta on Solidago gigantea - Epicauta ferruginea
Sevenmile Creek, 8 km NW of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
August 7, 2021
Size: 9.4 mm
Tan-colored beetle, elongate, elytra shorter than the fat abdomen, on Solidago gigantea inflorescence. Common on Solidago gigantea and Helianthus annuus flowers, ca 40+ present. Mid-afternoon, sunny, 87 F, moderate breeze.

Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland.

Epicauta ferruginea or something similar? Keyed to genus in Arnett et al. 2002. The non-combed claws plus the slight subapical notch with transverse, appressed hairs on the profemur bring us to Epicauta.

Keyed to species based on Pinto 1991
Moved from Epicauta.

Among the many characters of importance for species identification were the uniform dorsal pubescence, without maculae; the blackish color of the cuticle on the body and the legs; the protibial spurs spinelike; the metatibial spurs unequal, with the outer apically blunt and twice as wide as the inner; the eye very weakly emarginate anteriorly; and the dorsal pubescence rusty.

Pinto lists the size range as 5-10 mm for this species. Adult host records are primarily on Asteraceae, including Chrysothamnus, Grindelia, Gutierrezia, Helianthus, and Solidago -- also known from Cirsium (Asteraceae) and Kochia (Amaranthaceae).
