Scarab with tan elytra on deer dung - Flaviellus subtruncatus

Scarab with tan elytra on deer dung - Flaviellus subtruncatus
Sevenmile Creek, 8 km NW of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
October 6, 2021
Size: 6.1 mm
Dark beetle with tan elytra on partly dry clump of deer poop still moist on the inside, in a dry area of stream floodplain. At least 3 present along with ca 5 larger scarabs with red elytra. Stream floodplain disturbed in winter 2020-2021 by heavy equipment during stream restoration work. Large patches of bare ground, stands of exotic perennial grasses re-establishing, large patches of Chenopodium simplex and C. berlandieri with many ripe seeds, and patches of still-flowering Helianthus annuus and Sisymbrium loeselii. Smoky mid-afternoon, partly sunny, light breeze, 73 F.

Elevation ca 4000 feet. Disturbed riparian corridor on stream restoration site within a patchwork of native and non-native grassland.

The clypeus expanded to cover the head, plus the elytra covering the pygidium, are distinctive to the subfamily Aphodiinae. Apical spurs of the metatibia separated, with the tarsi arising between them, plus the clypeus completely hiding the labrum and mandibles from above, takes us to Aphodiini. Keys to Aphodius in Arnett et al. 2002, but the genus has been split. I have requested Gordon & Skelley 2007 and will try to get further once I have access to it.

nice addition!

Moved from Aphodiini.

Melinopterus prodromus?
Tried keying further in Gordon & Skelley 2007. Having tried quite a few different options in the key, the best match seemed to be Melinopterus prodromus - almost all characters in the description of this genus and species matched my specimen, with the notable and problematic exception that my specimen has definitely fimbriate pronotal margins, albeit shortly and sparsely so. The pronotum of this genus is described as "not laterally fimbriate." Nevertheless, other characters seemed to match very well, including the clypeus flattened and smooth, without ridges, with the anterior margin barely emarginate; pronotum black except for yellow lateral margins [and apical margin in my specimen], with coarse and fine punctures, the coarse punctures not present anteromedially, and with a complete basal line; elytra tan, pubescent especially apically, and fimbriate along the entire lateral margins, with some long setae near the humerus; venter dark, with somewhat long hairs; and apices of meso- and metatibiae fringed with unequal spinules. I also considered Phaeaphodius rectus for this specimen, but ruled it out because the description for clypeal sculpture did not match, nor did the pronotal sculpture match, nor was the basal segment of the metatarsus of this specimen as long as segments 2-4 combined [it was as long as 2-3 combined].
