Female, seeing as it has no wings. This specimen has a variation I have never seen in M. picipes, but heard of. The red edges on the abdomen. I have collected 2 specimens in this same location (my school), and both are male, and both are all black. I have seen this variation in Eric R. Eaton's Bug Eric blog.
