small bee with swollen femurs on sand - Oxybelus
Spillville Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA

Size: ~6 mm
I think this may be a fairy bee in the family Andrenidae but I'm not sure about that. I looked for bees with swollen femurs like this one has and didn't find much.

The nice thing to look at on
The nice thing to look at on these guys is the expanded wings of the scutellum which also has projections.

expanded wings of the scutellum
I see what you mean about the expanded wings on the scutellum in Oxybelus, Glen. I didn't know what you meant at first but then checked out photos of Oxybelus and saw your excellent close up showing that characteristic. I'll be watching for those scutellum wings if I ever find any more similar wasps. Thanks so much for your help!

Oxybelus
Thanks for identifying this mystery hymenopteran, to me, as being a square-headed wasp in the genus Oxybelus, Ken! I sure wouldn't have guessed that the two wasps I submitted today would be in the same genus.
