Very interesting to see this uniform light coloration
in an otherwise black species. I don't recall seeing one this pale so you must have photographed this individual in its early teneral stage well before the integument matured.

 
Yes.
I cut/pull sod with hand tools and remove all the soil/organic matter so I return whatever soil insects/grubs/caterpillars before I compost the sod. I'm going to make a solid guess that's why I got this beetle at this stage.
