Ant on Lepidium chalepense flower - Formica neogagates

Ant on Lepidium chalepense flower - Formica neogagates
Sevenmile Creek, 8 kilometers northwest of Helena, Lewis and Clark County, Montana, USA
May 14, 2021
Size: 4 mm
Habitat image posted for the article Habitats of the Sevenmile Creek Restoration Site, Helena, MT.

Stand of Lepidium chalepense on disturbed, gentle SW slope at the base of rubble excavated from an old prospect pit, blooming earlier than the majority of L. chalepense stands on the site. This area burned in the fire the previous fall, and L. chalepense was one of the most exuberant plants to resume aboveground growth on this microsite. In the background are the burned stems of a Prunus virginiana thicket at the base of the hill, at the edge between grassland and floodplain.
