Reared from Ostrya virginiana. Found as larvae on 7/20 in leaf rolls adjacent to leaves with what are assumed to be primary upper surface digitate/serpentine mines (which is typical of Caloptilia). The primary mines were frequently small upper surface blotches with serpentine portions radiating out from the central hub. Frass was deposited in one or a few clumps or along the sides of the blotch and is centrally deposited in a thin black line in the serpentine tracts. These primary mines were found vacated on 7/20. The leaf rolls were very recently made when found, the larvae were still very small and very little of the leaf had been fed on and not much frass was present when opened. Larvae created larger leaf cones as they got bigger and both fed by window-mining and eating from the edges of the leaf. Larva turned pinkish as it got ready to pupate. One larva died prior to pupating, but the other spun a small cocoon in a crease on the upper surface of a leaf on 8/2. The adult emerged 8/14.
