Strumigenys eggersi - Female
Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA
January 12, 2022
Size: 1mm
Two of these slow-moving, minute ants were collected within a soil sample measuring about a third of a cup's worth. The sample was from beneath a tiny stand of neglected trees (mostly volunteer Schinus terebinthifolius, but also three clusters of dwarf Musa acuminata and two Cocos nucifera, with abundant Smilax sp. vines) growing from and around a small drainage pit within the fenced-in perimeter of the small parking lot of the building where I work beside the international airport. Soil was collected to retrieve mites for practice with slide preparation, but finding these ants made for an interesting surprise.

Identification was made using the key managed by AntWiki.
