I think this is actually a male Diapheromera carolina.
There is a resemblance to Megaphasma, but this is not that. Most notable are the lack of spines (except the one big one) under the middle and hind femora, and the smaller head.

I've compared this to the original description of D. carolina, as well as Blatchley's description, and there is a photo of the holotype at the Phasmida Species File here.
