Spinicaudata clam shrimp - Female
Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, Key Largo, Monroe County, Florida, USA
January 23, 2022
Size: 4.5mm
These were found swimming within a drying puddle in the middle of a dirt hiking trail. Most were full grown and carrying cysts (eggs) like the individual depicted here. A layer of green algae was growing within the center of the puddle, and these crustaceans were found cruising through the water, combing through the surface sediment along the shallows of the shore, and scavenging from a drowned millipede. Debris within the shell occurred postmortem while within the vial. Specimen is one of six currently preserved in alcohol.
