. I you have not already downloaded MONA Fascicle 27-3, you should. There are really only three Abagrotis species to consider in the southwest that look like this -
alampeta
,
orbis
,
denticulata
. They are all discussed fairly close together towards the end of the fascicle with images all together in Plate 6. The fascicle also provides range maps which quickly eliminates
denticulata
from this Arizona location. On Page 228, the fascicle mentions the biggest difference between
alampeta
and
orbis
is with filling of the orbicular and reniform spots. In
alampeta
the spots are filled with ground color, while the spots on
orbis
typically have darker fill than ground color, especially with the reniform. I probably should mention that
reedi
is in the area and somewhat similar, but that species typically has dark banding all across the ST area instead of just at the costa.
