I've seen flies that mimic bees or wasps, but this guy, which I found crawling on an old log, seemed to pretend to be a beetle.

Hoping someone can at least point me toward a family...

beetle mimics are scattered among several dipteran families
[google beetle+mimic+diptera and see what transpires... that's how i would proceed; alternatively, wait for an educated verdict]
