Size: Maybe around 10 mm?
I thought the small holes along the center of the elytra were interesting, althought they may just be common?

diagnostic
I think Peter or others may tell you that on ground beetles these punctures (number and location) are often important to making a determination. I'm usless beyond that, but nice images! :)
