Size: over 1.5 in. maybe 4-5 cm
Is this a hornet?

It's a Horntail
the Pigeon Tremex, in the guide here. We believe it lays its eggs in dead or dying trees and its larvae are preyed upon by the giant Ichneumons whose ovipositors are long enough to reach way down into the wood to find them.
This may be our first post from Homer Glen! Hope to see more from that great environmental community.
