Photographed on flowering Urtica dioica near stream, in habitat burned the previous fall, with Prunus virginiana and Alnus incana, generally top-killed by the fire but resprouting. Just a few hundred meters downstream of the stream restoration site where I make most of my insect observations.

Probably not, these are certainly butterfly caterpillars. Hemileuca have heavily branched spines.
